A Taste of Treasure on Bristol’s Open Doors Day

Saturday 10th September saw three members of the Long John Silver Trust attend the Benjamin Perry Boathouse on Redcliffe Wharf to sell books and aaarrrrtefacts to help raise booty to maintain our Treasure Island Trail.

Thanks to peoples generosity, £30 was raised, enough to maintain the Trail for a week!

During the day we teamed up again with the lovely Boathouse Betty (who is always really kind to us), Caveman Alan (who as ever was tending his beloved Redcliffe Caves) and Pirate Pete (who has just launched a new book entitled ‘Bristol Slavers’).

In addition to tending the Trust stall, members of Hawkesbury’s guides were treated to a one hour tour of our Treasure Island Trail featuring storytelling and history.

As you can see in the picture, a new artwork by Feoflip has just been created on Redcliffe Wharf, and it’s a stunner! A decent memorial to the slave trade in Bristol is long overdue …

January Fund Raiser for LJST

The Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton kindly organised a fund raiser for the LJST.

On Thursday 28th January a brewery visit by customers of the Beaufort to Cotswold Spring’s and Severn Vale’s magnificent new home at Tortworth raised £80 for the LJST (thanks mostly to the breweries’ generosity).

The picture shows the pub’s very own Bishop of Wigan, Stan Fillingham, getting a chair lift at the brewery with bearers Tony Harcourt and brewery owner Mark Francombe.

Many thanks to all who attended and contributed to the event, we had a terrific reception at CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year the Salutation at Ham afterwards, and once again Westward Travel ably provided the transport.

Beer expert Tom Salt provided the picture - thanks again.

Long Shaun Silver Celebration BBQ - 31st July 2015

DSCF1563-croppedFriday night at the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton saw a special fundraiser c/o of Dilly’s all star Barbie team, in the presence of our Long Shaun (Shorn) Silver …

A massive £425 was raised to be shared equally between Bristol’s Grand Appeal and our Trust’s imminent RLS Treasure Island Trail.

Tons of thanks are deserved and here they are in Dilly’s words: -

“Thank you to everyone who came along and enjoyed our BBQ in the Beaufort garden. Special Thanks go to:

Genna and Karen who did a really good job selling raffle tickets. They raised a staggering £200 – so a great big well done.

To our very own Zebra legged cook Nathan who did a great job cooking the burgers & sausages.

To Hannah our veggie cook.

To Pete for coming to the rescue with the cooking (it got really busy).

We raised £225 on the food!

To Harry for giving us some excellent entertainment.

To Sam for doing anything I needed.

And to everyone else who helped to make such a Brilliant Day.

In addition to Dilly’s thanks I would like to give her a special huge thanks for organising it all, a thank you to Lin and Sarah for wrapping all of the raffle prizes, also the prize donors, Adrian for some nifty early entertainment and Kim and Karen for doing a deal on the luxury food.

Charities’ Bucket Collection at Bristol Hippodrome

Bristol theatre goers, how about combining a great show with giving to two of the finest charities on the docks?

Celebrating their 100th anniversary, the Bristol Hippodrome has kindly allowed the LJST and Matthew charities to benefit from the forthcoming run of Nicholas Newton’s superb production of ‘Pirates of Penzance” …… 18th - 22nd June 2013.

You’ll make the Pirate King very happy…

Long John Whisky Bottle Donations

Long John Whisky BottleAfter a few years on the Beaufort Arms bar collecting pennies and shillings the lovely Sue and trustee Dave (not quite so lovely) counted a massive £195.61p in treasure from our L. J. whisky bottle.

The booty will be added to our buccaneering funds as soon as possible. This follows on from our previous bottle which some scallywag nicked from the bar when it was last full.

Hawkesbury and Horton Women’s Institute Literary Tour in Bristol

On Thursday 19th July 2012 Trustee “Long John Steedsy” took a party from Hawkesbury and Horton Women’s institute around some of Bristol’s literary heart, giving them a taste of some of the fantastic literary heritage which has been passed down to us. A great time was had by one and all.

The W. I. very kindly gave the Trust £25 for the charity treasure chest.

If you are interested in one of Steedsy’s walks, he would explain how Bristol’s rich maritime history has inspired stories of exploration and daring voyages and that The Hole in the Wall in Queen Square is said to be the basis for The Spyglass in Robert Louis Stephenson’s Treasure Island ….. and much, much more ………

Amazing Donation

I was in The Beaufort last night and Mark told me of two Americans, Richard and Bill Dalebout from Utah, USA who came into the pub whilst walking a very wet and muddy Cotswold Way.

In return for what Mark called “a simple kindness” they presented him with an amazingly generous donation for The Trust of £40.

So to Richard and Bill a very warm and sincere ‘thank you’ from The Long John Silver Trust. We hope the rest of your walk went well and wish you good luck with your next adventure!
