Return to Trail Map
Silver
was still arguing with his former comrades regarding Jim
and he accused Merry of being "brisk
for business".
He took Jim to one side and told him that he had taken to him "like
pitch" and that he was "as smart as paint". Silver produced
the map and then stood down as Cap'n. The pirates then rushed
off to get the treasure.

The way to the treasure was
macabre, the trail having been lined by Flint with his dead crew's
corpses to point the way to the Dubloons. The pirates were further
spooked when they heard Ben Gunn crying out the name of a former
shipmate "Darby
McGraw" in a ghostlike manner.
They found an old sea chest but after digging
around it, they realised the treasure had gone. They then turned
on Silver and in the resulting fight Silver killed George Merry,
and he and Jim were rescued by Livesey, Trelawney et al - along with
Ben Gunn. Gunn revealed that he had hidden the treasure in his cave
and after rescuing the Squire's party had taken them there as well.
You'll have to read the book to find out what happens next ...On
Merchants landing, guiding people from Redcliffe Wharf to the new
Museum of Bristol would be an ordinary seaman carrying his load along
the quayside - but in our case the treasure from Ben Gunn's cave
to the safety of the Hispaniola. Even if you weren't on the trail
it would be a scene reminiscent of Bristol's past.
